Sea Salt vs Table Salt: Does It Matter for Electrolytes?

Not really. For electrolytes, sea salt and table salt are almost the same — gram for gram they deliver essentially the same sodium, since both are roughly 40% sodium. Your body doesn't read the label. A sodium ion from sea salt and a sodium ion from table salt are the exact same thing. When you sweat during a long match or a hot afternoon, you lose sodium, and you replace it with sodium. The rock it started as makes no difference to that transaction.

So if a company tells you their sea salt hydrates you "better" because it's sea salt, they're leaning on a feeling, not chemistry. For sodium replacement specifically, the source barely matters.

So where do sea salt and table salt actually differ?

They do differ — just not in the way that sells product. The two real differences are iodine and additives, plus a small amount of trace minerals and a difference in processing.

1. Iodine

Table salt is usually iodized, meaning iodine is added to it. This is one of the genuine public-health wins of the last century. Iodine is an essential nutrient, and adding it to common table salt helped wipe out a lot of iodine-deficiency problems in populations that weren't getting enough from food.

Most sea salts, including French grey, do not have added iodine. That's not a knock on sea salt — it just means if table salt was your main iodine source and you switch entirely to sea salt, you'll want to make sure you're getting iodine elsewhere (seafood, dairy, eggs, and iodized salt in cooking are common sources). 2. Additives

Refined table salt typically contains anti-caking agents — things like sodium aluminosilicate — added to keep it dry and free-flowing so it never clumps in the shaker. They do their job well. But they're additives, and for some people that's the whole reason they went looking for something simpler.

Unrefined sea salts don't need anti-caking agents. They keep a little natural moisture, which is part of why quality sea salt often feels slightly damp and clumps a bit. That texture is a feature, not a flaw — it's salt that hasn't been stripped and re-engineered.

3. Trace minerals

Unrefined sea salts like French grey (also called sel gris) retain small amounts of trace minerals — magnesium, calcium, potassium, and others — that heavy refining removes. The grey color itself comes from the clay and minerals in the salt flats where it's harvested.

Here's where I'll be blunt, because a lot of brands aren't: these trace minerals are real, but they're tiny. They are not a meaningful dose of magnesium or potassium. If you need real magnesium or potassium, sea salt is not how you'll get it. Anyone implying their sea salt is a mineral megadose is overselling. Trace means trace.

4. Processing

Table salt is heavily refined and often mined from underground deposits, then processed down to nearly pure sodium chloride before additives go back in. Unrefined sea salt is made by evaporating seawater and doing very little else. Neither approach is "bad" — they're just different, and that difference is what accounts for iodine, additives, and trace minerals above.

Read that top row again. For the one thing you actually care about when you're replacing sweat — sodium — they're a tie.

What this means for hydration

A brand puts a pinch of fancy sea salt in a packet and then builds the entire story around "84 trace minerals" or "ancient sea minerals," as if that's what's doing the work. It isn't.
